After a 50-foot boat sank in Home Bay, Rākino on Friday night, a sizable oil spill developed over the weekend while local residents struggled to get the Harbourmaster to act.

A Rākino resident who does not wish to be named says the boat had been moored in the bay for months. Locals had complained to the Auckland Harbourmaster several times about its condition and a couple of close calls as it dragged anchor towards the rocks. The resident says it was just a matter of time before the ship sank and caused an oil spill. They noticed the spill on Saturday morning and, concerned about the kororā that frequent the bay, and the nearby shag colony and shellfish beds, they contacted the Harbourmaster.
