Patrick Kilkelly hadn’t been living on Waiheke long when he signed up to join the island’s volunteer firefighters. His cousins had been firefighters on the West Coast and a panel beater he knew gave him a nudge to join up here. He was 31, fit, sporty and ready for action, or so he thought. Of course, he says, he had no idea what he was in for.
