Safia Archer’s weekly arts diary –
Father, husband and artist, Russian-born Ilya Volykhine started to paint seriously in 1995 in New York City.
Communist Russia did not have room for a career as an artist, but the vibrant artistic community he moved to brought colour to canvas.
Unique and endearing, his works capture moments from everyday life – a picnic, a commute, a seemingly trivial home scene, imbued with personality through colour, space, collage and form.
Since moving to New Zealand in 2009, Waiheke-based Ilya has exhibited throughout New Zealand in both solo and group exhibitions. His current solo collection Inhabited is at Exhibitions Gallery of Fine Art in Newmarket this month.
