The government’s proposal to make granny flats easier to build could help ease Waiheke’s housing crisis – if most of them don’t end up as short-term visitor accommodation, says Waiheke Community Housing Trust general manager Damian Sycamore. The government is currently holding public consultations on its proposal to allow ‘granny flats’, buildings of up to 60 square metres, to be built without needing a consent. Housing Minister Chris Bishop recently said it was making it “easier to build granny flats and increase the supply of affordable homes for all New Zealanders.” • Paul Mitchell
