People are being urged to watch out for the Northern New Zealand dotterels as they begin to lay their eggs this month. Endemic to Aotearoa, these birds thrive in coastal areas and can often be observed nesting on Blackpool Beach.

Data from the Department of Conservation (DOC) shows that there are a total of 2500 dotterels in the country, and their population is “recovering” due to conservation efforts.
