Waiheke fuel is more expensive than petrol on Stewart Island for the first time, as the Commerce Commission releases the findings of its recent investigation into the island’s high prices.
In July the commission wrote to the three Waiheke petrol retailers asking them to explain the extra 90 cents per litre island motorists pay at the pump compared to their Auckland neighbours. In a recent public statement, the commission said: “We discovered that the extra costs to supply fuel to the island, in particular freight, account for less than one third of the price differences between Waiheke and fuel stations in Auckland, on average.”
