The National Coalition government recently passed an amendment to the Overseas Investment Act, softening the foreign buyers ban on residential properties – although experts say they expect little real change for Waiheke.
The foreign buyers’ ban was passed by the Labour Coalition government in 2018, when Stats NZ figures showed 7.3 percent of all Auckland houses sold were being sold to foreign buyers – and this figure rose to nearly 20 percent in Auckland’s more expensive suburbs.
