For the third summer in a row, Waiheke beaches have been awash in foul-smelling toxic black algae and this year it has been clogging streams as well.
Thick black mats of algae have formed on the Surfdale shore and at Blackpool and Shelly Beaches. Gulf News understands residents living next to the Hooks Lane and Surfdale streams have grown concerned for eels and other aquatic life as the algae turned up further and further upstream, reporting the issue to Auckland Council in December.
