Local bird experts are preparing for the arrival of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), also known as bird flu or H5N1. The virus has spread rapidly throughout the world over the last two years and experts are warning that New Zealand needs to be prepared for it to arrive here.

Karen Saunders, founder of the island’s Native Bird Rescue, says the centre will treat the virus in a similar way to how hospitals managed Covid.
