Drop-in centres have long been an essential element of New Zealand society, where young people can develop social and work skills while spending time with their peers. Waiheke Youth Centre Trust’s ‘The Rock’ at Surfdale is no exception. With the trust due to celebrate 30 years in 2024, coordinator Doris Aoina talks to Gulf News about its purpose and history.

“Initially, this is for youth to have a safe place to come after school to relax, eat and not have too much structure. They come here to talk to their friends, and we also discuss different topics,” says Doris.
