Waiheke residents are still reeling after the island’s only after-hours medical service ended abruptly on 30 August, without warning or clear explanation. This despite Health New Zealand Te Whatu Ora confirming its funding of the service for another year, with an increase of 2.5 percent. It has now been revealed that the organisation running the service, Waiheke Oranga Urgent After Hours Ltd, has been facing financial difficulties for some time.

Waiheke Health Trust chief executive Jen Glover says the Waiheke Oranga Urgent After Hours service had initially been the result of an “incredible effort by Piritahi Hau Ora Trust, Waiheke Health Trust, Te Whatu Ora and others to deliver a much-improved after-hours service by way of a joint venture.”
