
The future impacts for Waiheke and the surrounding Gulf of the government’s latest proposals to allow commercial fishers to sell marlin ‘bycatch’ along with 19 reef fish species could be “stark and scary” according to environmental experts.
In October, Fisheries New Zealand proposed a package of 19 changes. Two of the proposals seek to allow commercial fishers to keep and sell dead marlin and also allow trawling, bottom longlining and Danish seine operators to sell 19 species of reef fish, including red moki and boarfish, through bycatch.
