It’s that time of year, when seasoned Waihekeans start worrying about their water supply over the summer: are we in for a big dry like the drought of 2019, the deluges of 2023, or somewhere happily in between?
It seems NIWA predicts rainfall levels could go either way – but whatever happens, it’s likely to be hot.
The 2024 and 2025 summer outlook summary says there will “inevitably be relatively wet and dry days, and hot and cold days, within a season”.
“As the season progresses, a lean towards more frequent rain events is expected from about the new year, particularly for northern and eastern parts of the North Island.”
