Two weeks ago, Waiheke residents woke up with a rotting smell inundating their homes. The stinking black algae that washed ashore at Surfdale and Blackpool beaches just about the same time last year was back. Test results to ascertain if the algae is the same toxic seaweed, were not in at the time Gulf News went to press but official advice was not to handle the algae meanwhile. • Silvia Massa
