A cleanup crew has begun removing black algae at Blackpool and Surfdale beaches. Auckland Council has placed signs to warn residents not to touch the algae and not to swim at the affected beaches. The Waiheke contractors began extracting the Okeania spp algae, piling the weed on foreshores for removal, on Monday 22 January. • Silvia Massa
