Auckland Council is seeking feedback on a proposed revamp of waste rules on storage, kerbside collections, public rubbish bins and licencing of waste collectors and facilities. After a recent review of the existing waste management rules exposed gaps, double-ups and confusing sections, the council proposes replacing the Waste Management and Minimisation Bylaw 2019 and the Collections Control 2023 with new versions.
The proposed new bylaw updates rules for waste collectors that require a license from the council – which have been expanded to include community recycling centres, scrap metal recovery, e-waste, and food and garden waste processing facilities. To simplify things, the new bylaw removes the current exemption for when 20 tonnes or less of waste is collected to directly exclude the operations this was intended to cover, the council says.
